Included in this searchable database are programs which offer business advice, loans, grants, location assistance, and a wide range of other services for small businesses throughout the city — often at no cost or for a low fee.
The Partnership is a nonprofit membership organization comprised of a select group of two hundred CEOs - its Partners - from New York City's top corporate, investment and entrepreneurial firms. The Partnership focuses on research, policy formulation and issue advocacy at the city, state, and federal levels. Through its affiliate, The New York City Investment Fund, the Partnership directly invests in economic development projects in all five boroughs of the city. The Partnership serves as a resource of expertise and creative thinking for the public. The Partnership sponsers economic impact studies, conducts business surveys, and convenes task force panels and conferences for Partners, economic experts, public officials and other constituencies concerned with economic development.
The Port Morris Industrial Business Zone includes businesses located along the shoreline of the Harlem River and East River between 149th Street and Bruckner Boulevard to East 150th Street. SoBRO acts as the liaison with New York City agencies, helping to resolve problems that may arise within the park, particularly those having to do with the physical maintenance of the area. Businesses are also eligible for EZ certification and the tax and financing benefits that accrue to EZ certified businesses. The Park includes most manufacturing/industrial properties in the area and is home to approximately 400 businesses including plastics, paper products, metal working, and furniture firms.
The Pratt Area Community Council (PACC), a community-based organizaton, is focused on facilitating the economic well-being of the Fort Greene, Clinton Hill and Bedford-Stuyvesant neighborhoods. PACC's Economic Development department works closely with local Merchants Associations, elected officials and community organizations in Central Brooklyn. Their current Economic Development priorities include spearheading the Fulton Street Business Improvement District (BID) and serving as the Local Program Administrator (LPA) of the Main Street Program, which focuses on improving a seven-block stretch of Fulton Street between Grant and Bedford Avenues. The Fulton Street Business Improvement District (BID) promises to make powerful and sustainable improvements in Fort Greene and Clinton Hill. The BID would extend from Rockwell Place to Classon Avenue and all streets facing Fulton Street (Lafayette, Greene and Putnam Avenues).
PTAC's primary responsibility is to counsel and advice businesses regarding government procurement opportunities. Services offered include: bid notification for open federal, state and local agencies; assistance with completion of certifications and registrations such as HUB Zone, 8(a), Duns & Bradstreet, CCR; one on one assistance with completion of NYC or NYS M/WBE (Minority/Women Business Enterprise) Certification applications; Assistance with bid preparation for city, state and federal opportunities; individual counseling on all contacting needs; business development workshops and seminars; outreach and networking opportunities and annual business Opportunities Expo.
Professional Women In Construction (PWC)is a non-profit member association for entrepreneurs, professionals and managers (women & men) and companies and public agencies engaged in construction and allied industries. Mission: to advance the status of business and professional women in a male-dominated industry and educate the public regarding women's achievements. The organization offers business networking events, a newsletter, trade show & recruitment fair, referrals, workshops in trends of the industry and certification information for woman and minority-owned firms. Qualitas of Life is a non-profit organization that provides financial education to Hispanic immigrant families in New York. Qualitas of Life facilitates immigrants' access to financial literacy programs and financial services. Qualitas' financial education workshops began in 2007 and they have expanded to teach workshops in community centers in all five boroughs of New York City. The Queens Air Services Development Office (ASDO), a nonprofit organization, helps Queens businesses procure contracts with the aviation industry at both JFK and LaGuardia Airports. It maintains a computerized vendor directory and sponsors networking events bringing together the aviation industry, government agencies and prime contractors to meet with Queens vendors and service suppliers. It also co-sponsors workshops and seminars with other organizations and technical service providers on topics of interest to small businesses. This office supports economic development throughout the borough through a variety of programs and initiatives. To assist businesses with location planning, it provides data on neighborhoods in the borough. Information on economic incentive programs is also available. The office assists business in dealing with government agencies and provides referrals to specialized services.
The Small Business Center is collection of over 1,400 circulating and reference books that cover the many categories of business start-ups. The collection's books range from general small business start-up information for all types of businesses to specific categories like starting a gift basket business or restaurant. These books have call numbers that start with [SBC] and are located in the small business center area.
