Q: Can I bring my car?
A: You can choose to bring your car, but NYPL does not have parking. Indeed, free parking in NYC is a rare thing and garages are expensive. There is also alternate side of the street parking in effect most days, requiring one to move one’s car from one side of the street to the other for street cleaning. If in spite of all this, you wish to bring your car- good luck!
Q: Can I bring my family?
A: NEH Summer Institutes are focused on the professional and scholarly development of participants. Family and friends may not attend institute days. If they join you in the City for a visit- terrific! Just remember that absences can impact your stipend and there is a certain amount of “homework” expected of Summer Scholars.
Q: What essential clothing should I pack?
A: Ah, summer in the City! Temperatures can hover near 100 degrees and the humidity can be very high, yet inside spaces such as subway cars, stores, and restaurants may be ice cold. Within the library buildings temperatures may change from room to room. The best strategy is to wear layers and have a sweater or wrap handy to put on when needed. We will be taking a few outings, including two walking tours, so a sun hat and shades (not to mention sun screen) would be a good idea as well as very comfortable walking shoes. (The nice thing about being in NYC is if you forget anything it will be easy to pick it up at any number of stores.)
