The Van Nest Branch of The New York Public Library, which opened in 1967, is an attractive building with a white facade. It is located in a busy commercial area on Barnes Avenue near Lydig Avenue. This one-story facility houses adult, young adult, and children's collections. All parts of the library, with the exception of the restroom, are wheelchair-accessible.
In 2005 an interior spruce-up included a renovated children’s room featuring a bright and lively color scheme, new furniture, and a special area for toddlers; a reorganization of the floor plan including a new glass-enclosed community/story hour room; new computers; and new furniture, flooring, paint, and lighting.
