ACCION USA provides loans and other support services to businesses throughout New York City's five boroughs, Long Island,Westchester and New Jersey. Loans of $500 - $50,000 are made to individuals or to groups of borrowers at every stage in their business, and can be used for equipment, merchandise, working capital, business expansion and more. All types of businesses are eligible for loans, including home-based ones. Service in Spanish is available.
AABDC assists U.S. and Chinese businesses to identify and develop trans-national business and marketing opportunities. It organizes trade missions, seminars and workshops, and facilitates in-depth exploration and implementation of cross-border business development strategies and operations in the U.S. and China.
AWIB is a membership organization offering networking events, as well as conferences and seminars on skills building, business development and a variety of industry-specific topics. Annual membership fees for business owners/entrepreneurs begin at $125.
Part of the Columbia-Presbyterian Medical Center, Audubon is a modern, six-story facility housing 50,000 square foot of laboratory and office space. The only biotechnology business incubator in the City, Audubon supplies the structure and organization to facilitate developments in biotechnology that will ensure improved health care, while contributing to economic growth through the creation of private sector research collaborations and the generation of new biomedically related business. Audubon is designed to house early stage, private research and development companies in the Life Sciences industry.
The Division of Continuing and Professional Studies (CAPS) at Baruch College offers professional certificates, seminars, courses, and training in a variety of areas. Programs of interest to small businesses would include: accounting, bookkeeping, payroll, management, marketing, professional office skills, business communications, certified financial planning, personal development, finance and project management (PMI). Business related courses are held in the evening and vary in length from one day to several weeks. In addition, CAPS offers courses in English as a Second Language for academic, professional, and social purposes. The Academic Intensive English Program, which is I-20 eligible, provides 20 hours per week of instruction during the day. Business ESL and GMAT test preparation courses are also available during the daytime, evening, and Saturdays. Modern language courses for business, travel, and cultural purposes are given on week nights and Saturdays.
This program assists small, minority, or women-owned construction firms in obtaining surety bonds and working capital for construction contracts. The program also provides individualized counseling, training, and technical assistance in the areas of starting a new business, joint ventures, business planning and development, estimating, and bonding. New York City construction businesses with annual gross receipts within the last three tax years averaging $500K or less, or a heavy construction business with annual gross receipts within the last three tax years averaging $1.5M or less are eligible. The Bronx Chamber of Commerce was established to strengthen the economic viability and improve the quality of life for the Bronx. They play an active, significant role in the economic development of the borough, and formed many initiatives and partnerships that have made strides in the crucial fields of education, employment, and health.
Partnerships and individuals/sole proprietorships doing business under a name other than their own need a Doing Business As (DBA) Business Certificate. File a Business Certificate form with the County Clerk's Office in the borough where your business is located. The Bronx Overall Economic Development Corporation (BOEDC), the administrator of the Bronx Empowerment Zone (EZ), offers two loan programs for qualified Bronx Empowerment Zone companies. Both programs offer loans at a very low interest rate and long terms in return for the borrowers commitment to hire Bronx Empowerment Zone residents. The Business Assistance Initiative (BAI) can generally lend up to $1 million to finance up to half of a project's cost. The EZ Loan Fund can finance up to 80% of a project's cost up to loans of $200,000.
The BIEE initiative consists of three separate partnership funds: The Bronx Partnership for Electric Transportation, the Bronx Partnership for Environmental Benefit, and the Bronx Partnership for Residential and Commercial Energy Efficiency and New Technology. The goal of the initiative is to demonstrate pathways to a greener Bronx. For-profit companies, non-profit organizations and housing corporations operating in the Bronx are eligible to apply for BIEE funds. BIEE funds can be used for: Implementation of energy-efficient measures, including electric/alternative fuel machinery and equipment; Boiler retrofit; New technology to reduce air pollution and/or cause energy savings, e.g.: green roofs and other greening measures; Solar technology; Wind technology; and Customized energy surveys.
