The Brooklyn Economic Development Corporation [BEDC] is a 32 year old private, not-for-profit organization. As a multi-service agency working with government agencies, educational institutions, and the private sector, BEDC offers comprehensive business consulting and economic development services. BEDC offers technical assistance, financial assistance, location assistance, and entrepreneur training programs for start-up and early-stage entrepreneurs.

The Brooklyn Navy Yard is a 300-acre 3.5 million square foot industrial park on the waterfront, currently housing aound 250 small and medium-sized businesses. It offers reasonable rents for prime city real estate ranging from $8 to $20 a square foot, in spaces from 500 to 100,000 square feet. Available spaces are in well-maintained, single and multi-storied buildings with elevator accessibility. Benefits include: self-contained business community with 24-hour security; NY State Empire Zone tax abatements; and an Employment Center to help business find qualified employees.

Workforce1 Career Centers are a one-stop shop for employers and jobseekers. Services to businesses may include human resources consulting, job-candidate screening and customized training for employees. For jobseekers services include resume and interview preparation, job-search coaching and access to educational and training opportunities. Build Now-NY is an initiative designed to give New York State an edge in pre-permitting sites. Build Now-NY is creating an inventory of locations for a wide range of other business profiles, making them ready for development when the opportunity arises and even creating opportunity. Build Now-NY site profiles include high technology manufacturing; warehouse/distribution/e-commerce centers; and multi-tenant business and technology parks.

CPSBPD provides on-site training and on-campus training to businesses and corporations on a contractual basis. Rates are less expensive than commercial firms.

The Business Information Center [BIC] provides the latest high-tech hardware, software, and telecommunications to help start-up and expanding businesses. The BIC offers a variety of counseling services and training opportunities. Access is available to a range of print and electronic resources [including the Internet]. The Business Initiative Corporation of New York[BIC] administers the SBA 504 Loan Program. BIC works with the SBA and with private lenders to provide financing to small businesses, focusing on all industries and sectors comprising the NYS economy - industrial, commercial, manufacturers, and service industries. For profit organizations, partnerships, proprietorships, and LLC's are eligible. Minimum loan amount is $50,000; maximum is $5,000,000 - $5.5 million in priority areas. After an initial intake and analysis of an ongoing or prospective business, counselors develop a needs assessment and work with clients to identify and take advantage of appropriate specialized services, programs, and financing sources. There are BOCs throughout the city with multilingual services. Other BOCs are located in Brooklyn, Chinatown, Newark, Queens, and Staten Island.
