Checkroom Service and Policy

As a service to researchers, and to improve the study environment for all, the Schomburg Center for Research in Black Culture provides a supervised, no-fee checkroom. It is located on the first floor, near the entrance.

For reasons of safety and security the items listed below must be checked if the individual is there to conduct research in any of the collection divisions. There is no charge for this service. All users are expected to comply with this policy.

  • Parcels
  • Shopping bags and oversized bags (including purses)
  • Suitcases
  • Large containers
  • Wheeled conveyances, including strollers
  • Briefcases and back packs

The following research-related items will be allowed in the General Research and Reference Division reading rooms: small purses, personal books and other reading or writing materials, laptop computers. Everything must fit in plastic bags provided by the Check room staff.

Special Collections Checkroom Policy

All coats, briefcases, parcels, packages, and umbrellas, including brief cases, book bags, and laptop cases, must be checked before using the Special Collections reading rooms. Notes (not notebooks) and pencils only are permitted.

Checked materials must be picked up no later than ten minutes before closing. The Library is not responsible for items left overnight.

Library visitors must submit all books, bags, briefcases, and other containers for inspection upon entering and exiting the building, including those that were checked during your visit.
