Karole Armitage Interview, Excerpt

The Interview with Karole Armitage, conducted by Deborah Jowitt, was audio recorded on Sept. 24, 2011, for the Speaking of Dancing project.
 
This excerpt begins with Deborah Jowitt posing a question about how Karole Armitage was influenced by her work with George Balanchine and Merce Cunningham, who were both known for creating choreography without dramatic content.  Armitage responds by discussing her experiences interpreting Cunningham’s choreography as a dancer.  She goes on to speak about how people instinctively interpret the movements of others and her belief that this tendency affects audiences’ experience of dance.
