Author @ the Library: The Crime Films of Anthony Mann, with Max Alvarez, a New York writer, film historian and frequent speaker on the subject of world cinema culture.
Before achieving renown for his electrifying 1950s James Stewart westerns, Hollywood director Anthony Mann (1906-1967) created a brilliant cycle of black-and-white crime thrillers, including such film noir masterworks as Raw Deal (1948), Side Street (1950), and Desperate (1947). Tough, uncompromising, and often beautifully conceived, these Mann thrillers of the 1940s touch upon everything from illegal immigration and working class struggles to intense studies of the criminal mind in post-World War II America.
Join the film scholar and author as he discusses his new book, The Crime Films of Anthony Mann (University Press of Mississippi), and studies via DVD clips and slides, the vision and craftsmanship of the master filmmaker during his formative years in Hollywood.
