NYPL welcomes tomorrow's scholars to explore the resources of the "Lion" Library!
PLEASE NOTE: For K-12 school groups, 1 adult for every 15 students is required.
Grades K-5: Please contact the Children's Center at 42nd St. at childrenscenter42@nypl.org or call (212) 621-0208.
Grades 6-12 and college classes: Please complete this form to request a visit. We will respond within two business days. Be sure to make your request at least six weeks before your desired date. (IF YOU ARE INTERESTED IN LITERATURE TO LIFE PERFORMANCES- SCROLL DOWN FOR RESERVATION INFORMATION)
You can choose any program on its own or any TWO programs can be combined for a 90 minute visit. Any one program can serve a maximum of 30 students, two combined programs can serve a maximum of 60 students. K-12 programs are generally scheduled between the hours of 10-1. College and afterschool school group visits can be arranged for later times as public programming schedules allow. Program choices for your visit are:
1. On View: A tour of the latest exhibition of NYPL treasures! Currently our flagship exhibition space is closed while transitioning into the next major exhibition, Lunch Hour NYC, which will explore that most interesting subject- eating! Ways of eating, especially the mid day meal, reflect change over time, cultural influences, even changes in technology! Lunch Hour NYC will run from June 22, 2012–January 13, 2013, and it is already possible to reserve a program ahead of time, so please do!
If you are visiting before then, Shelley's Ghost, the Afterlife of a Poet is on display in our smaller gallery. The exhibit features the manuscript of Frankenstein and many other wonderful objects from Shelley and his circle.
2. Find It!: Great for all students Grades 6-12, College and Teachers Take a hands-on digital resource workshop that introduces your students to all of our online resources and meets them wherever they are in the research process. It is designed to improve their research skills and school assignments. 45 min.
3. Art and Architecture of the Stephen A. Schwarzman Building: Great for all students Grades 6-12, College and Teachers Tour the beautiful Beaux-Arts landmark building! The tour focuses on the New York Public Library’s art and architecture, history and unique design features while also educating students on the library’s mission and incredible resources. 45-60 min.
4. Between the Lions: Geared towards college students, this program gives an overview of the building and the special collections of the Schwarzman Library. Our staff will give information on the variety of specialized collections available for your students' future research, visit open access areas and address the specific details of working in this magnificent library. 60 min.

These engaging 90-minute presentations include a professional stage presentation along with either a masterfully facilitated discussion with a Teaching Artist or drama-in-education activities.

We do not have a cafeteria, but there are many places in the area to pick up food and if the weather allows sitting outdoors, Bryant Park is right next door!
