New York’s Censuses and City Directories: Ancestral Record Links Across Decennial Gaps of Federal Censuses

City directories are a much used resource here at the library, and the Milstein Division provides access to an extensive range of New York City and United States city directories, from the late 17th century through, in some instances, the 1960s. The humble city directory can be used in a wide variety of ways.

Locating then distinguishing New Yorkers with similar names is daunting, especially in decennial gaps. This presentation will show you how New York’s censuses and city directories can be used together to help you solve this research conundrum.
