This was one of  Kirk  Douglas' first great roles.  The film  portrays  the horrific trench  Warfare of 1916 and how indifferent the French  high command was toward throwing away  thousands  of lives. Here Douglas must lead a veteran,  but battered French  Infantry regiment to capture a German  strongpoint aptly named the Ant Hill!  Film  director Stanley  Kubrick  spared no details  in shwoing how conditions were in the trenches.  You can almost feel the incoming shells and smell the sulfur and sweet.  This film  shows the French aspect of the war very  much  as All  Quiet On  the Western Front  showed the  German side.  A classic with  as much power today as ever.
