"Art of the Cantonese Opera Aria" Lecture/Performance

April 13, 2013

Program Locations:

Chatham Square Library, Community Room

The singing of Cantonese opera arias is a long and cherished tradition in the Chinese community. Gaohu player Tien-jou Wang with musicians and singers take a look at the anatomy of the aria, demonstrating the relationship between speech and singing style, melodic patterns, modes, opera voices, and musical accompaniment. Arias sung in the female zihou voice and male pinghou voice demonstrate the artistry of Cantonese aria singing.
