The Brooklyn Navy Yard Development Corporation (BNYDC) is the not-for-profit corporation that manages the Navy Yard under a contract with the City of New York. As the landlord for the Yard's 330 businesses that employ over 7,000 people, BNYDC's mission is to lease space in the Yard, develop the underutilized areas of the Yard, and oversee the ongoing modernization of the Yard's infrastructure. In 2011, the Brooklyn Navy Yard Center at BLDG 92 opened as a program of BNYDC. The mission of BLDG 92 is to celebrate the Navy Yard’s past, present and future, and to promote the role the Yard and its tenants play as an engine for job creation and sustainable urban industrial growth. By providing access to exhibits, public tours, educational programs, archival resources and workforce development services, BLDG 92 reinforces the Yard’s unique bonds with the community.
Workforce1 Career Centers are a one-stop shop for employers and jobseekers. Services to businesses may include human resources consulting, job-candidate screening and customized training for employees. For jobseekers services include resume and interview preparation, job-search coaching and access to educational and training opportunities. Build Now-NY's Shovel Ready Program is an initiative designed to give New York State an edge by pre-permitting sites for development. Build Now Shovel Ready-NY offers an inventory of locations for a wide range of other business profiles, making them ready for development when the opportunity arises and even creating opportunity. The site profiles include high technology manufacturing; warehouse/distribution/e-commerce centers; and multi-tenant business and technology parks.
BCNA, which receives funding through a variety of private and government sources, helps its clients and workshop attendees: obtain microloans to start or expand a business; learn business management skills; understand personal finance and everyday cash management; establish and contribute to a savings account; and purchase a first home or apartment with the help of special government programs. BCNA staff provides services in a variety of languages including: Vietnamese, Cantonese, Mandarin, Russian, Spanish, Hindi, African dialects of Bassa & Kru, French & Creole, and Tibetan & Nepali. Services are also available at BCNA’s Queens Office located in JacksonHeights.
Business First is a business-focused portal to the wealth of incentives, programs and resources available to companies - large and small- within New York State and those who chooose to relocate here. The site is administered by Empire State Development, but dozens of other agencies are represented. The Business Information Center [BIC] provides the latest high-tech hardware, software, and telecommunications to help start-up and expanding businesses. The Business Initiative Corporation of New York[BIC] administers the SBA 504 Loan Program. BIC works with the SBA and with private lenders to provide financing to small businesses, focusing on all industries and sectors comprising the NYS economy - industrial, commercial, manufacturers, and service industries. For profit organizations, partnerships, proprietorships, and LLC's are eligible. Minimum loan amount is $50,000; maximum is $5,000,000 - $5.5 million in priority areas. The BOC network, with offices throughout the City, offers free counseling and referrals. After an initial intake and analysis of an ongoing or prospective business, counselors develop a needs assessment and work with clients to identify and take full advantage of specialized services, programs and financing sources offered by other organizations. BOC counselors also provide essential follow-up, looking for early warnings of problems, particularly in utilizing loans. The South Brooklyn BOC also offers grants for low-income entrepreneurs. Languages spoken include English, Russian, French, Hebrew, and Yiddish. Note: Other BOCS are located in North Brooklyn, Chinatown, Harlem, Hunts Point, Queens, and Staten Island. Affiliated with the Business Outreach Center [BOC] Network the Washington Heights and Inwood Development Corporation [WHIDC] operates the Upper Manhattan Business Outreach [BOC] offering a variety of services to small business owners and entrepreneurs. These services include one-on-one business counseling, business legal services, direct loans of up to $50,000, business training and technical assistance referral, and business plan / financial statement review.
