Library Card

Your library card is your key to the resources the Library has to offer. Learn how to get one here.

Your library card is your key to the resources and services of all New York Public Library locations in the Bronx, Manhattan, and Staten Island. In addition to borrowing library materials, your card will let you reserve a computer, download digital media, search hundreds of electronic databases, and more.

How Do I Apply for a Library Card?

Adult and teen users may either apply online or in person at any New York Public Library location or Library-sponsored event.

You must present valid identification in person at a New York Public Library location before using your card to borrow materials, download eNYPL content, search Library databases, or reserve a computer. Accepted forms of identification may be found here. Identification cannot be submitted by mail or fax.

Applications for children ages 11 and under must be completed in person at the Library or any Library-sponsored event, and require the signature of a parent or guardian.

Please see the Library Card Terms and Conditions page for complete eligibility requirements and additional information.

Note: Applications submitted online may take up to one month for processing and delivery  via  U.S. mail.

How Do I Replace a Lost or Stolen Library Card?

First, report your card as lost or stolen, either by phone (917-ASK-NYPL), in person at any Library location, or by e-mail. Eligible users may also apply for a replacement library card online.

Please be aware that when you registered for your New York Public Library card, you accepted responsibility for all items on the card, all use made of the card and all charges made against it until your card is reported lost. The Library must have a record of your card having been reported lost, or it is not considered lost.

The cost of replacing a lost or stolen library card is $1.00. This fee is assessed at the time the card is reported lost.

What Is a Personal Identification Number (PIN)?

When using certain Library services (such as reserving a computer or checking your account online) you may be asked to enter both your library card number (found on the back of your card underneath the barcode) and your PIN.

  • You were given the opportunity to select a PIN at the time you registered for a Library card.
  • PINs must be 4 numeric characters to work with Library services.
  • If you have forgotten your PIN, if you are accessing The Library’s catalog remotely and have provided us with a valid e-mail address, you may request that your PIN be e-mailed to you. If you have forgotten your PIN and are visiting a Library location with valid identification, a staff member may re-set your PIN for you.
  • Your PIN cannot be changed or confirmed by phone.
