The New York Public Library’s Division of Teaching & Learning offers programs and services that connect students and teachers with engaging and unique resources.
Professional development programs for teachers provide direct contact with our world-class collections. Exchanges with scholars, research librarians, curators, and instructors, all engage teachers as creative, independent thinkers, and participants in an ongoing life of the mind.
Book talks, library tours and research workshops engage students with the joy of reading, the resources available to them through NYPL and the thinking skills needed to succeed with their academic goals.
Our programs are open to everyone: every public, private, and parochial school serving pre-K through college and university students is eligible to participate. While our curriculum is designed to support education in New York, and all programs directly connect to the New York State Learning Standards, we welcome visitors from anywhere in the world. Most programs are free!
What teachers are saying:
All of us at P.S. 102 have appreciated your visits these past years. The children are spellbound listening to your book-talks and interactive stories. I, too, listen intently and order all those books you bring to us and follow your suggestions. Our Principal, Ms. Gittens, always reminds me to call you for Open School Day/Night. Our parents are able to learn about the NYPL and get library cards immediately. It’s a great convenience for them and their children. Thank you for bringing your books and heavy load of pamphlets up four flights of stairs to share with us the joys of literature.
Judith Horowitz, Library Cluster, P.S. 102
Many thanks from Washington Irving High School students, faculty, and administration for organizing The New York Public Library young adult orientation program…. The students really enjoyed the booktalks and many rejoiced over the opportunity to regain the borrowing privileges they had lost. Thanks for making these two days very special for Washington Irving students.
Karin Kolbre, Librarian, Washington Irving High School
Your commitment to our students and our library is outstanding. We have established a semi-annual program at High School of Fashion where Young Adult Librarians from the NYPL visit our schools, once each semester, to talk about exciting books, and special Library programs for teens.… We are instilling a lifelong love of reading and improving reading skills.
Judith Dahill, Librarian, High School of Fashion
