How to Find Things
The Library's online catalog is your first stop to locate books, movies, music, and other individual items from both the research and circulating collections.
The Catalog includes more than 8 million records: over 6 million records for titles cataloged since 1972 and over 2 million records for titles cataloged prior to 1972.
The records represent collections acquired from around the world in more than 370 languages or dialects, and in a variety of formats including:
- Printed materials
- Music scores and sheet music
- Archival and manuscript materials
- Musical and non-musical sound recordings
- Video and film
- Cartographic materials
- Software and databases
A second catalog interface, commonly known as the Classic Catalog, is available here.
Each version of our online catalog offers unique features as well as slightly different processes for managing your library account. You can learn more about managing your account using Bibliocommons here. To learn more about managing your account using the Classic Catalog, visit this page.
Items in our catalog display a variety of statuses based on their availability. Here is a list of the many statuses you may encounter when searching.
What's Not In the Online Catalog?
Some of the research centers' holdings are still found only in the retrospective catalogs of various subject and language divisions.
NYPL continues to add records to The Catalog that were previously found only in the book catalogs of the various research centers, or as printed cards. It is advisable to search the appropriate book catalog if no record is found in the online Catalog, particularly for works published before 1972. For assistance, please ask a librarian.
