Dr. Anthony W. Marx
President and CEO
Distinguished political scientist Anthony W. Marx was appointed president and CEO of The New York Public Library in 2011, and has worked to expand the Library's essential role as a provider of free educational opportunities for all New Yorkers, focusing on increasing services to students, researchers, and scholars; improving educational programming in NYPL's 87 neighborhood branches; partnering with the city's Department of Education to increase public school access to critical learning materials; and expanding public access to e-books and other digital resources.
As president of Amherst College from 2003 to 2011, President, Marx – a recipient of multiple fellowships and the highly regarded author of three books and more than a dozen scholarly articles – passionately promoted access to higher education for lower-income students. Prior to joining Amherst, he served as professor and director of undergraduate studies of political science at Columbia University, spearheading a number of secondary school initiatives. In the 1980s Marx helped found Khanya College, a South African secondary school that prepared more than 1,000 black students for university.
A native New Yorker who frequented the Inwood Library as a child, Marx is a product of the city's public school system, attending P.S. 98 and the Bronx High School of Science. He then studied at Wesleyan and Yale, graduatingmagna cum laude from Yale with a BA in 1981. Receiving an MPA from the Woodrow Wilson School at Princeton University in 1986, Marx went on to earn MA and PhD degrees, also at Princeton, in 1987 and 1990.

David G. Offensend
Chief Operating Officer
After building a successful career in finance, David G. Offensend decided to bring his talents to the non-profit world, joining The New York Public Library in 2004 as Chief Operating Officer. Tasked with directing the multilayered financial and administrative aspects of the Library, Offensend has enabled NYPL to optimize services for patrons while implementing innovative strategic planning practices to further the Library’s mission.
Prior to joining NYPL, Offensend cofounded the private equity and investment banking firm Evercore Partners Inc. in 1995. Before founding Evercore, Offensend spent five years in the investment organization of Texas investor Robert M. Bass, and 13 years at Lehman Brothers, where he served as President and Chief Executive Officer of Lehman Brothers Merchant Banking Partnership.
An active member in the philanthropic community, Offensend serves on the boards of Princeton University, Hudson Global, Bedford Stuyvesant Restoration Corporation, and Brooklyn Bridge Park Corporation, and is a Trustee Emeritus of the Brooklyn Children’s Museum.
Andrew W. Mellon Director of The New York Public Libraries
Appointed Andrew W. Mellon Director of The New York Public Libraries in 2012, Ann Thornton is responsible for collection development, preservation, reference services, fellowship programs, and exhibitions at four world-renowned research libraries.
Thornton has been at NYPL since 1996, when she was hired at the Science, Industry, and Business Library as its first public training coordinator. She subsequently held positions as Assistant Director of Electronic Resources, Associate Director of the Humanities and Social Sciences Library, and Director of Reference and Research Services. Most recently she served as Acting Andrew W. Mellon Director of The New York Public Libraries.
Anne L. Coriston
Vice President for Public Service
Anne L. Coriston has been the Library's Vice President for Public Service since 2001, responsible for managing the vital services that the NYPL offers the public at its 87 neighborhood branches. These services include public programming for adults, teens, and children; teaching and learning classes for patrons interested in technology, ESOL, and literacy services; and the management of NYPL's dedicated volunteers.
In this role, Coriston has developed educational programs and partnerships to better serve NYPL, and has been instrumental in building and enhancing relationships with local communities, elected officials, and donors.
An active member in the library industry, Coriston served as Executive Leadership Institute Sponsor with the Urban Libraries Council, where she helped create a training curriculum program for staff development. She was also the Committee Chair of the Public Library Association's Public Libraries Committee and is a member of the American Library Association.
Coriston began her tenure at the Library in 1997, first as Vice President of Government and Community Affairs, and then as Deputy Director for Administrative Services. Prior to her time at NYPL, Coriston worked as chief of staff for New York City Council Member Kathryn Freed.
Vice President for Finance and Strategy
Jeff Roth is the Library’s Vice President for Finance and Strategy. In this capacity, he oversees strategic planning, budgeting, and controller functions. The Library's Strategy Group launched in 2008 and is responsible for leading overall strategic planning efforts, advising senior management on time-sensitive business decisions, and managing large-scale programs and initiatives, including the Library’s website. He reports to the COO/CFO and staffs the Library’s Finance and Audit Committees.
Roth started with NYPL in 2000 as Budget Director, and in 2003 was promoted to Vice President and then to Vice President for Strategic Planning. Major projects include launching NYPL’s groundbreaking partnership with the New York City Department of Education, which brings books and other library materials directly into the city’s public schools, giving students and teachers the tools they need to succeed.
George D. Mihaltses
Vice President for Government and Community Affairs
Appointed the Library's Vice President for Government and Community Affairs in 2009, George D. Mihaltses acts as the Library's liaison with elected officials and their staffs at the Federal, State, and City levels. His responsibilities include planning, developing, and implementing strategies for sustaining and increasing government support of the Library and its programs.
Mihaltses previously served as Chief of Staff to New York City Council Member Peter F. Vallone, Jr., Chairman of the Council's Public Safety Committee. He was responsible for managing all aspects of the office's daily operations, including legislation, budget, communications, and constituent services. Additionally, he was responsible for handling the office's land use and zoning matters and assisted in the preparation of Public Safety Committee hearings. He served on Community Planning Board 11 in northeast Queens, as a member of the Zoning Committee and as Chairman of the Parks Committee. A former Board President of the 218-10/12 43rd Ave. Owners Corp., he currently serves as a Board member of the Astoria Performing Arts Center.
Vice President for Development
Jennifer Zaslow is Vice President for Development for The New York Public Library, where she leads the Campaign, Annual Fund, and Membership initiatives that support the Library’s world-renowned research facilities and its network of 87 neighborhood libraries.
Arriving at NYPL in late 2008, Zaslow brings more than 20 years of experience working on behalf of the great writers, artists, and cultural institutions of New York City. She has collaborated closely with trustees and volunteers to help institutions achieve their goals — from planning and executing capital campaigns, to building membership programs and creating corporate partnerships and special events.
Before joining the Library, Zaslow was Director of Development for New York City Opera at Lincoln Center. She also served as Director of Development for Manhattan Theatre Club, the nonprofit theater company. Earlier in her career she worked with noted literary and theatrical agent Gilbert Parker at the William Morris Agency.
Michele Coleman Mayes
Vice President, General Counsel and Secretary
Michele Coleman Mayes, was appointed Vice President, General Counsel and Secretary at The New York Public Library in 2012. She serves as chief legal officer and is responsible for guiding NYPL's legal strategy to enable the Library to achieve its mission.
Before joining The New York Public Library, Mayes was Executive Vice President and General Counsel for the Allstate Corporation. Having previously served as General Counsel for Pitney Bowes, Inc., she has also held leadership positions at Colgate-Palmolive Company and the Unisys Corporation. From 1976 to 1982, Mayes served at the U.S. Department of Justice as an Assistant United States Attorney in both Detroit and Brooklyn, rising to Chief of the Civil Division in Detroit.
Widely recognized as a leader in legal and philanthropic circles, Mayes has been the recipient of numerous professional honors, including the American Bar Association's Margaret Brent Award and the Minority Corporate Counsel Association Trailblazer Award. She was named to the Ethisphere® Institute's "Attorneys Who Matter" list of general counsels in 2011, two years after making the National Law Journal's list of "Most Influential General Counsels."
The American Lawyer honored her with a Lifetime Achievement award in October 2012.
In 2011 she co-authored Courageous Counsel: Conversations with Women General Counsel in the Fortune 500, which chronicles the rise of women to the role of general counsel.
Vice President of Human Resources
Louise Shea was appointed Vice President of Human Resources at The New York Public Library in 2008, and in a relatively short time has redesigned the Library's HR services to support the strategic direction of the institution and its mission for the future. She has created centers of expertise devoted to staff and their professional development, and has positioned the Human Resources department as a strategic partner to the unique and varied consituencies within The New York Public Library.
Prior to joining NYPL, Shea was Vice President of Human Resources at the International Rescue Committee, a humanitarian organization, where she built a department serving a global workforce of 10,000 employees, developing areas in recruitment, employee relations, and compensation and benefits, as well as in learning and development. As Acting Vice President of Human Resources at CARE, the international humanitarian organization, Shea managed the relocation of the non-profit organization from New York City to Atlanta, while developing a strategic structure to support the organization's new initiatives. Shea has also held management positions at Hipp Waters, the American Institute for Foreign Study, and Save the Children.
Vice President of Comunications & Marketing
Ken Weine was named Vice President of Communications & Marketing at The New York Public Library in 2013. He leads a department that is responsible for informing and educating the public about the Library’s programs, services, plans, and initiatives. Weine manages the development and execution of the Library’s communications and marketing strategies, and specifically directs the NYPL's media relations, social media, multimedia, and publications and graphics teams.
Before joining the New York Public Library, Weine was Vice President of Communications & Branding for Consumer Reports. He started at Consumer Reports in 2006 and was responsible designing and implementing communications strategy for the organization's magazines and Web sites, and for the advocacy campaigns of Consumers Union. He also led a branding initiative for the 77-year-old organization.
Prior to Consumer Reports, Weine was Communications Director at Newsweek, and before that a Staff Attorney and Communications Director at the Brennan Center for Justice at NYU Law School.
