Greek Vase. Picture Collection, The New York Public Library
The Mid-Manhattan Library has scheduled several thought-provoking,
educational art presentations. Among the many activities will be lectures
by Nancy
L. Thompson, Ph.D., on Greek art and architecture ; Jamey
Hecht, Ph.D.,
on Sophocles as educator; Guy Rogers, Ph.D., on Alexander
the Great; Lois E. Wilcken, Ph.D., on sirens and mermaids;
Rev. John Spilio on the
art of traditional icons; multimedia artist Kyriakos Katzourakis on
his films and paintings; and a slide-lecture by Nicholas Sperakis on
his woodcuts and paintings. The celebration continues with presentations
by Getchie
Argetsinger and Tom Knutson who will perform
selections from Mary Zimmerman’s
Metamorphoses, which won a 2002 Tony award for best director;
a solo performance by Argetsinger, in which she explores Greek mythology
through story-theater;
and a staged reading of Dimitri Michalakis’s The Petrakis Universe,
performed by the American Thymele Theatre of New York. Also scheduled are
poetry readings by Dean Kostos, George Economou, Emily
Fragos, Constantine
Contogenis, and Penelope Karageorge; a reading and book discussion of Facing
Athens: Encounters with the Modern City, with author George
Sarrinikolaou;
and an author-lecture by Barry Strauss on The Battle of Salamis: The
Naval Encounter That Saved Greece and Western Civilization.
