The staff of NYPL Express –

The NYPL has for most of its existence maintained a strong collection of trade literature. A recent staff project to identify the most important American trade journals in each of the standard economic categories confirmed this point. Either in print or on film the Library holds all of the fundamental periodicals chronicling the entire history of American industry. For example one can find Engineering News-Record/ENR from 1874 to date, the American Gas Journal since 1859, Electrical World from 1883 to the present, Automotive Industries since 1899, Women’s Wear Daily from 1910 to the present, Chemical Week from at least 1914 to date along with many more specialized titles.
A related strength of the collections has been publications of ‘learned’ and professional associations. Most relevant here are the myriad of publications of the American Chemical Society, the American Society of Civil Engineers, the IEEE and many others. The Library has significant international scope as well. Just among the British associations, a traditional strength of the collections, there are extensive holdings of publications of the (British) Iron and Steel Institute, the Institute of Electrical Engineers, the Society of Engineering and the Society of Chemical Industry.
Stars and Stripes

Over the years we have been asked numerous times to locate information and articles in the military newspaper Stars and Stripes. With no indexing available, page-by-page searching was necessary. We are delighted to report that The Library now holds digitized versions of the WWI Edition, 1918-1919, and the European, Mediterranean, and North African editions, 1942-1964, of the Stars and Stripes. The database allows for name and keyword searching as well as browsing by date. Polling
