Thinking Out Loud: At the Heart of Gold: Screening and Talkback

In a new documentary, survivors of the U.S.A. Gymnastics scandal tell their stories of the abuse inflicted by Dr. Larry Nassar.

For 30 years Dr. Larry Nassar was a highly respected athletic trainer who served as the osteopathic physician for the U.S. women’s Olympic gymnastics team, as well as a physician at Michigan State University. But in 2018, 156 women who had suffered sexual abuse under the guise of medical treatment faced him in court to condemn his actions. 

Based on years of research by producers Dr. Steven Ungerleider and David Ulich, At the Heart of Gold: Inside the U.S.A. Gymnastics Scandal shares the stories of the women who spoke out against their abuser. Through interviews with dozens of survivors, as well as coaches, lawyers, and journalists, the film exposes an environment in which young women spent their youth competing for victory on a world stage, juxtaposed against a culture where abuse was hidden, and lives were forever damaged.

Following a screening of the film, Ungerleider and Ulich, who have recently founded Courage First, an abuse prevention program, will be joined in conversation by Trinea Gonczar, a former gymnast who shares her story in this important investigative documentary. They will speak with Rebecca Ruiz, an investigative reporter for The New York Times.
