Displacement, Desplazamiento | Meghan Keane, Jill Conner, Jonathan Goodman, Sebastián Ramírez Hernández | Art and Literature Series Event

In celebration of her recent New York gallery debut and monograph publication, artist Meghan Keane and monograph contributors bring NYPL audiences a roundtable conversation on the capacity for art to remain expressive, to expand the subjecthood of the canon, and to move the needle on the burning social issues of our times.

Displacement, Desplazamiento features Meghan Keane’s paintings of Colombian refugees whom she painted while staying in the outskirts of Bogota. The book includes intimate behind-the-scenes photographs, essays by art writers and cultural critics, and interviews with Keane’s subjects, first person reflections on how sitting for a painting impacted their lives. Significantly, fifty percent of each painting sale goes directly to the shelter Keane’s sitters lived in—Fundacion Colombia Nuevos Horizontes—to support their ongoing work with those displaced by violence. Once all paintings are sold, Keane and her collectors will have underwritten the foundation’s operating expenses for two years.

Meghan Keane is a Brooklyn-based painter and printmaker. She is increasingly known for her unexpected, peripatetic approach to generating work. Her paintings have been published in The New York Times and four prints of work from Displacement are on long-term display at Princeton University.

Jill Conner is an art critic and curator based in New York. She is New York Editor for Whitehot Magazine and writes for Afterimage, ArtUS, and Art in America. She is founder and director of AS | Artists Studios, an online database featuring the strongest non-represented art in New York and Paris.

Jonathan Goodman is a poet and New York art writer and editor. He has published extensively on modern and contemporary art for such publications as Art in America, Brooklyn Rail, Sculpture, Art Asia Pacific, and Art on Paper. The recipient of two grants from the New York Foundation for the Arts, he published his first collection of poems, Metropolitan Rooms, in 1994. He is also an Associate Visiting Professor at Pratt Institute's Department of Fine Arts. 

Sebastián Ramírez Hernández is an anthropology PhD candidate at Princeton University who investigates internal displacement in Colombia. He resides in Brooklyn, New York.

Conceived and organized by Arezoo Moseni, and in its sixth year, Art and Literature Series events bring forth pollinations across the literary and visual arts with readings and discussions by acclaimed artists, authors and poets.
