Victor Herbert, Nationalism and Musical Expression

Event Details

NYU professor Marion Casey explains Herbert's relationship to nationalism and the ways in which he expressed that musically.

When Victor Herbert was named president of the Friends of Irish Freedom in March 1916, few could have predicted that the bon vivant composer of favorite American operettas would emerge as the spokesperson for Irish independence in the weeks before the Easter Rising in Ireland. Professor Marion Casey of New York University's Glucksman Ireland House explains Herbert's relationship to nationalism and the ways in which he expressed that musically. Select recordings will be played.

Presented in partnership with CualaNYC, New York City's Irish Cultural Festival. www.cualanyc.com
