One could say that reinventing himself as an artist after having given up his studio practice decades ago, William Carroll is a unique and at the same time archetypical New Yorker. He received his BFA from Pratt Institute in 1973 but stopped making art to become the Director at two New York galleries. Yet in spite of his professional success, William Carroll felt compelled to once again make art. So, in a manifestation of bravery that most of us can only marvel at, he enrolled at Queens College where he received his MFA in 2007. Since then he has produced a refined, elegant body of artwork that seamlessly merges his life and practice.  In celebration of William Carroll's site-specific Art Wall on Third exhibition New York: My City critic and curator Deven Golden converses with the artist about the path that led him to reinvent his life and art.

William Carroll has been involved in the New York art world for over thirty years. He was Director of the Charles Cowles Gallery and the Elizabeth Harris Gallery in New York. He also worked at the Dia Art Foundation, Brooklyn Museum, and Nancy Graves Foundation. He is currently Director of EFA Studio Program. Carroll has curated numerous exhibitions, the most recent at Shirin Gallery in Chelsea.  He teaches an MFA course in professional practice at Pratt Institute, and has lectured extensively at other institutions. His paintings have been reviewed in Art in America, and he has had four solo exhibitions, the last in January 2015, at Elizabeth Harris Gallery where his work is represented. His next solo exhibition will open at Evans Contemporary in Peterborough, Canada sometime in 2016.

A graduate of the School of the Art Institute of Chicago, Deven Golden has been an exhibiting artist, museum curator, alternative gallery board member and chairperson of exhibitions, independent curator, art consultant, director of two galleries – one in Chicago, one in New York – and ran his own gallery in Soho and Chelsea. He has been a visiting artist/critic or guest lecturer at multiple universities and colleges, and taught professional practices at The School of the Art Institute and University of Illinois and for the past five years he has presented a seminar on writing artist statements for the Professional Practices class at the Pratt Institute. He has curated over 30 exhibitions, and has been writing catalogue essays and reviews on a regular basis for various publications since 1984, including The New Art Examiner, Dialogue, and Bomb Magazine.  Deven Golden is currently a contributing editor for artcritical and runs the Art Monkey Rench blog.

Initiated and organized by Arezoo Moseni in 2004, Artist Dialogues Series provide an open forum for understanding and appreciation of contemporary art. Artists are paired with critics, curators, gallerists, writers or other artists to converse about art and the potential of exploring new ideas.
