Citizen Cartography II: Warping Maps
- February 23, 2016
- Canceled
This hands-on workshop will show you how to add valuable geographic information to old maps by overlaying digital images of historical maps onto today’s map through a process called georectification, or "warping" maps. You will also learn how to capture boundaries, roads, historical street addresses, and other important historical information from old maps through a process called digitization, or "tracing" maps. This work supports the Library’s historical mapping game, Building Inspector, and the upcoming Space/Time Directory.
What is the Map Warper? The Map Warper is a free tool (available at maps.nypl.org) that enables you to transform digital images of historical maps into the tiles of a virtual atlas.
Who should take this workshop? Anyone who has taken Citizen Cartography I: Introduction to the Map Warper. Students, teachers, map lovers, history buffs, artists and researchers can all use the Map Warper. You can too.
How can I find out more? Attend a workshop, watch the tutorial at maps.nypl.org, or send an email to citizencartographer@gmail.com to get your questions answered.
