Two of the most influential avant-gardists of the late 20th century are George Maciunas, charismatic ringleader of the seminal group Fluxus, and Dick Higgins, mercurial proprietor of the legendary small press, Something Else Press.  Barbara Moore worked with both men in the formative mid-1960s and was a close witness to their sometimes fractious relationship that resulted in two distinctly original, but dissimilar, publishing programmes.

Moore's talk covers commonalities, differences, and interactions on the publishing front and how these played out in Higgins and Maciunas's shared artistic environment, all as personally experienced by Moore and documented in rare source materials.

Barbara Moore, a writer in residence in the Wertheim Study, is an art historian and writer specializing in avant-garde art of the 1960s, '70s and '80s.  For over 50 years she has managed the vast Peter Moore photographic archive of performance art and its antecedents and is in the midst of authoring a book titled Observing the Avant-Garde : Peter Moore and the Photography of Performance.
