Films at the Schomburg: The Liberation Series (Felix)

Event Details

Join us for a screening of Roberta Durrant's award winning film Felix, the first of two films featured in The Liberation Series. Described as “Billy Elliot with Cape jazz," this family-friendly film follows 14-year-old Felix as he dreams of becoming a saxophonist like his late father. When he leaves his township to take up a scholarship at an elitist private school, he defies his mother and turns to two aging members of his father’s old band to help him prepare for the school jazz concert.

Roberta Durrant is a creative director and producer of television and film. She has directed/produced several long-running, award-winning drama series and sitcoms for South African broadcasters as well as three feature films.

The Liberation Series is a double feature of two recent South African films: Felix, the story of a teenage aspiring jazz muscian, and Miners Shot Down, a documentary about a 2012 platinum mine strike that ended in violence.

Presented by the Schomburg Center for Research in Black Culture, The Apollo Theater and World Music Institute as part of the Africa Now! South Africa festival and African Film Festival, Inc.
