This talk will view representative examples of two hundred years of children's books. We will examine various notable editions of a British fantasy classic, Alice's Adventures in Wonderland, as well as an American classic, The Wonderful Wizard of Oz. Illustration techniques, social and religious concerns, humor, and pathos will be explored via books from the earliest colonial primers to the works of Maurice Sendak.
