Preservation Week: Preservation Week 2014: Behind the Scenes - A Brief Look at the Barbara Goldsmith Preservation Moving Image Labs

Date and Time
May 1, 2014
For ages 13 to 18 years
Event Details

Presenter: Rhony Dostaly, Moving Image Preservation Production Supervisor, Barbara Goldsmith Preservation Division, New York Public Library

The moving image labs are located in the New York Public Library for the Performing Arts at Lincoln Center, in an area closed to both general public and non-Preservation staff. Take this rare look at the behind the scenes workings of the moving images labs and the steps required to convert analog media to digital master files.

This presentation will show the major necessary steps in our moving image preservation process. We will cover everything from how we prioritize what gets digitized to how the final product is delivered back to the client. We will also give a brief overview of the many types of formats we are able to work with in the labs. The presentation will be delivered mostly in layman’s terms without too much technical jargon.

This presentation is one in a series of public events sponsored by The New York Public Library Barbara Goldsmith Preservation Division as part of the American Library Association’s Preservation Week
