Community Works in association with the Schomburg Junior Scholars, launches Harlem Is...Children’s Literature, with a series of programs that will engage children, their families, and the community at large in the rich stories that children’s books tell. The first program of a six part series focuses on the theme Life Stories, with the inaugural program featuring the new book Knock Knock: My Dad’s Dream For Me, written by actor, singer, and spoken-word poet Daniel Beaty and illustrated by award-winning artist Bryan Collier (Little Brown, 2013). The program at the Schomburg Center for Research in Black Culture on Saturday, November 23, 1-3 p.m., will include a community dialogue, dramatic reading and art presentation. It is presented in collaboration with Columbia University and Community Works’ Community Matters NYC Initiative.
The series is supported by the New York Council for the Humanities and dedicated to the memory of the late James Haskins, award-winning author of more than 100 books for young readers on the lives of African Americans.
