Before 5 is a Schomburg series that features premiere afternoon events for our daytime audience.

Take part in a reading of Sister Girl, a play based on the true story of Black Civil War Spy, Mary Elizabeth Browser. Bowser, a college educated freed slave who went undercover to work as a maid for Jefferson Davis in the Confederate White House in the Civil War. She pretended to be a half wit, even though she was brilliant, and stole secret Confederate documents and battle plans which contributed greatly to a victory for the North.
