Fall Open House

Our third annual Fall Open House is an opportunity to sample some of the exciting programs taking place at the Schomburg  - from guided tours and talks, to performances, and live music. 

6 p.m. – 7:30 p.m. Meet Schomburg Curators and archivists of the Manuscripts, Archives and Rare Books; Photographs and Prints; and the Jean Blackwell Hutson Research and Reference Divisions.

6 p.m. – 7:30 p.m. Meet the Schomburg Education team to learn upcoming school programs, professional development opportunities and teacher workshops.

6:30 p.m. & 7 p.m. Special performances inspired by The Schomburg Collects WPA Artists 1935-1943. Narration and musical selections by featured artists: actress Nora Cole, soprano singer Bridgett Hooks, gospel and opera singer June Townes accompanied by Dr. Gregory Payne.

6:30 p.m. & 7 p.m. Guided tours of Claiming Citizenship: African Americans and New Deal Photography curated by Rickie Solinger. The New Deal-era photographs illustrate a number of ways that African Americans took opportunities opened up by the New Deal to claim their status as citizens, in some ways laying foundations for the Civil Rights Movement. 

7:30 p.m. – 8:30 p.m. A live conversation on Afros: A Natural Hair Celebration with photographer Michael July and author Ayana Byrd. Moderated by Imani Perry, Professor at the Center for African American Studies, Princeton University.
