The Dickens Fellowship of New York

Date and Time
May 18, 2013
Event Details

It is the Dickens Fellowship policy to select a Charles Dickens work for the year to read/discuss. The latest choice is Our Mutual Friend. This was Dickens's 14th and last completely written novel published in 20 parts from May 1864 to November 1865.It is a combination of drollery and romance with a great deal of pain, with panaoramic descriptions of English society and dominated by the symbols of dust heaps and the Thames River that was a source of both livelihood and what Dickens saw as a deadly sewer of death. Some of Dicken's favorite themes: class, education, mercenary marriage and fraud appear in the novel.

Each meeting also has readings, films, and special events all relevant to the life and times of Dickens. Please try to read the assigned chapters in advance of the meeting. You can also read, share and discuss passages you found interesting.

This meeting: Book 2, Chapters 1-5
