LIVE from the NYPL: The One World Schoolhouse: SALMAN KHAN & CARLOS SLIM IN CONVERSATION WITH ANTHONY W. MARX

SALMAN KHAN is the founder of the Khan Academy (khanacademy.org), a nonprofit with the mission of providing free, high-quality education for “anyone anywhere” in the world. His new book, The One World Schoolhouse: Education Reimagined, includes his diagnosis of the problems in America’s current education system and solutions for fostering creativity among students and utilizing technology effectively in the classroom.

 

CARLOS SLIM HELÚ has been a businessman and investor since 1952. He has served as vice chairman of the Mexican Stock Exchange and chairman of the Mexican Association of Brokerage Firms. As a philanthropist, Slim has contributed to business and community development in Mexico and Latin America to improve education, health, sports focused in social support and development, justice, employment as well as the fine arts.

 

DR. ANTHONY W. MARX was appointed president and CEO of the NYPL in 2011.  From 2003 to 2011, he served as president of Amherst College, where he was a major advocate of increasing access to higher education for lower-income students.  A distinguished political scientist, Dr. Marx is the recipient of multiple fellowships and the highly regarded author of three books and more than a dozen scholarly articles.  Prior to joining Amherst, he served as professor and director of undergraduate studies of political science at Columbia University, spearheading a number of secondary school initiatives.  In the 1980s, Dr. Marx helped found Khanya College, a South African secondary school that prepared more than 1,000 black students for university.  A native New Yorker, Dr. Marx attended PS 98 and the Bronx High School of Science, later attending Wesleyan and Yale, where he earned his BA in 1981.  He holds an MPA from the Woodrow Wilson School at Princeton University (1986) and an MA and PhD from Princeton (1987, 1990).
