May 2013

Guy de Maupassant, Father of the Modern Short Story

The Necklace
Mathilde was ecstatic when her friend Mme. Forestier loaned her a diamond necklace to wear to a special soiree. Imagine her despair at the end of the evening when she couldn’t find the necklace anywhere.

The Jewels
Monsieur Lantin loved his wife, but he couldn’t afford to buy her jewels on a lowly clerk’s salary. After she died, financial hardship forced him to sell her costume jewelry for whatever he could get.

The Model
People gossiped as Jean Sumner, the artist, strolled by the sea with his wheelchair-bound wife,  formerly his model. Why would he marry an invalid except for love?

Other May Story Time PM Dates - May 20

The Hand
Magistrate Monsieur Bermutier recounts a strange case in Corsica where vendettas are common. It seems the English expatriate Sir John Rowell had the human hand of his worst enemy mounted like a trophy on his drawing room wall and secured by a heavy chain.

Who Knows?
The narrator of the story has decided to commit himself to an insane asylum as protection from a mysterious enemy who invaded his home in the dead of night and stole all the furniture, who knows how or why.
