Hand-Made: Hand-Made Crafternoon with Amy Azzarito: April 20th, 2013.

Event Details

Join crafty librarian Jessica Pigza of the Rare Book Division and Crafternoon author Maura Madden for this free DIY event for adults, with guest Amy Azzarito. All you need to do is bring a few pieces of 1.5-inch or 2-inch PVC coupling (available for less than a dollar in hardware stores; we'll have a few to share if you can't find any), a nice sharp pair of craft scissors that can cut through duct tape (we'll have scissors on hand as well to share), and your creativity!

Amy once worked at NYPL--and she was instrumental in creating the NYPL video series Design by the Book--but she's now managing editor of the popular blog Design*Sponge. Her new book, Past and Present: 24 Favorite Moments in Decorative Arts History and 24 Modern DIY Projects Inspired by Them has just come out!

(And remember, Amy will be happy to autograph copies of her book at this event! You can buy a copy of Past and Present at the Library Shop, and Amy will personalize it for you on the spot!)

Amy will show us how to turn the little PVC couplings into colorful napkin rings based on a project in her new book, and we'll have a spread of wonderful decorative arts books from the library's collections for browsing. Check back here or at Hand-Made at NYPL for additional details as the date nears.

Here are the details on this event:

  • I've stopped collecting advance registrations, but open spots remain and I'll welcome walk-in attendees at 1:50pm, so join us!

  • What to bring: Four pieces of 1.5-inch or 2-inch PVC coupling and a nice sharp pair of craft scissors that can cut through duct tape. You can find PVC couplings for less than a dollar each in hardware stores; they look like squat little white plastic rings. If you can't find them, don't worry; we have a small quantity to share, and we'll also have plain cards so you could also create colored patterned cards instead of napkin rings today! And if you don't have scissors, we'll have plenty to share as well. We'll supply the rest of what you'll need to turn your couplings into a set of 4 napkin rings.

  • Where: Stephen A. Schwarzman Building, Margaret Liebman Berger Forum (on the Second Floor, Room 227)
  • When: Saturday, April 20th, 2013, from 2:00 to 4:00pm
