American Sabor: From the Palladium to the Bronx"Machito" (born Frank Grillo, 1908-1984)"Machito" (born Frank Grillo, 1908-1984) 

A biographical documentary on the life and achievements of the Cuban-born singer, jazz musician, and composer Machito (real name Frank Grillo, 1908-1984), Machito: A Latin Jazz Legacy traces his musical roots in Cuba, then examines his contributions to the development of Latin music in the U.S., particularly the combination of Afro-Cuban music and jazz. Dance promoter Federico Pagani, bandleader Tito Puente, and musicians Dizzy Gillespie, Ray Barreto, and Dexter Gordon are among the contemporaries who comment on his work. The film features scenes of social and theatrical dancing in venues such as the Savoy Ballroom, the Palladium, and the Apollo Theater, with tap dancing, the rumba, swing dancing, and the mambo included.

This program is presented in conjunction with the exhibition American Sabor: Latinos in US Popular Music, on display in the Donald & Mary Oenslager Gallery, April 20 - July 13, 2013.
