Hip-Hop: A 30th Anniversary Celebration of Style Wars

 
A screening of the 1983 documentary Style Wars which explores the subculture of New York's young graffiti writers and break dancers, showing their activities and aspirations and the social and aesthetic controversies surrounding New York graffiti.
 
Winner of the Grand Prize for Documentaries at the 1983 Sundance Film Festival, Style Wars is regarded as the indispensable document of NY street culture and subway graffiti art of the early '80s, the filmic record of a golden age of youthful creativity that exploded into the world from a city in crisis.
 
The screening will be followed by a panel discussion with the filmmaker, Henry Chalfant, sculptor/painter Carlos "Mare139" Rodriguez, and moderated by painter/DJ iona rozeal brown.
 
 

This program is presented in partnership with the Schomburg Center for Research in Black Culture and the Tribeca Film Institute.

This program is part of a new series, RHAPSODIC CITY: MUSIC OF NEW YORK devoted to exploring some of the unique musical stories of the 20th century.
