As part of ReelAbilities 2013, we are happy to present the following films:

COMING HOME, Dir. Louis Neethling (UK, Narrative, 2009, 27 min, Narrative) Mark, a deaf man who was adopted by hearing parents, is determined to uncover the truth about his past so travels with his girlfriend to find out why his birth mother gave him up for adoption. As the past collides with the present, Mark begins to wonder if ‘truth’ is always empowering or if it is sometimes wiser to forget the past.

DEPARTURE LOUNGE, Dir. Louis Neethling (UK, 2010, 27 min, Narrative) Matt, a young hospital cleaner with a wife and baby avoids responsibility, staying out late and coming home drunk. When he meets Sid, a patient in the hospital who is also deaf, they bond and slowly come to realize that each can give courage to the other.

The films will be followed by a discussion led by Alexandria Wailes, a NYC-based actor and choreographer. Ms. Wailes is co-founder and the artistic director of the Senses Askew Company. In her spare time she conducts ASL tours at several museums, including the Whitney Museum of American Art.

These films are captioned. Voice/A.S.L. interpretation will be provided for the discussion. Please contact Brigid Cahalan at brigidcahalan@nypl.org or 212-340-0951 if you have any question or request for additional accommodation.
