Education @ the Schomburg: Black History Month Youth Film Series: WHITE SCRIPTS AND BLACK SUPERMEN
Program Locations:
Black History Month Youth Film Series:
White Scripts and Black Supermen: Black Masculinities in Comic Books
Running Time: 52 minutes, Suitable for: Grades 9-12
This film examines the levels at which some of the first Black superheroes adhered to and were subjected to stereotypes about Black men, as well as some of the alterations made (at times not so effectively) to coincide with the changing times. This film features commentary from scholars and cultural critics, as well as producers, writers, and artists who provide tools to critique and analyze the leading Black superheroes of the late 60s to the late 70s. This screening is part of a week-long series of films for young audiences that capture a diversity of voices on the African-American Experience. All films are followed by a discussion by the filmmakers, scholars, or Schomburg educators. To register, contact schomburged@nypl.org.
