January 2013 — Edith Wharton's New York Stories

The Rembrandt

Only dire need could make Mrs. Fontage part with the (unsigned) painting by Rembrandt that she and her late husband acquired fifty years ago on their honeymoon in Europe. Unfortunately she sees it through the eyes of love and memory, not with the  artistic knowledge of a museum curator.

The Verdict

Jack Gisburn suddenly gave up his successful artistic career and married a rich widow. When asked why, he  recounts the criticism he received from a painter he greatly admired. The strange part is that the painter was dead at the time.
