January 2013 — Edith Wharton's New York Stories

Mrs. Manstey’s View

An elderly widow in failing health, Mrs. Manstey spends her days looking out the back window of her third-floor room, enjoying the view of her neighbors’ back yards. When she learns a new building project will destroy her view, she is devastated.

Roman Fever

Two middle-aged ladies on holiday in Rome spend the afternoon reminiscing about their first visit to Rome  twenty-five years ago. Their conversation unexpectedly reveals long-held secrets from that visit.

Other January Story Time Dates - January 23

The Rembrandt

Only dire need could make Mrs. Fontage part with the (unsigned) painting by Rembrandt that she and her late husband acquired fifty years ago on their honeymoon in Europe. Unfortunately she sees it through the eyes of love and memory, not with the  artistic knowledge of a museum curator.

The Verdict

Jack Gisburn suddenly gave up his successful artistic career and married a rich widow. When asked why, he  recounts the criticism he received from a painter he greatly admired. The strange part is that the painter was dead at the time.
