Urban Stages: Explore Theater in NYC and Around the World

The 2012-13 Global Partners Junior program, Urban Stages, focuses on theater in cities around the world. From October to June, Children undertake research, read and write original texts, and create multimedia projects, using a variety of technologies from basic word processing applications to advanced digital design and video editing software. NYC children will communicate online with children from around the world working on the same curriculum, sharing insights with one another through blogs, video chats and online discussions.

Unit 1: Theater in My City - Children begin their exploration of theatre in NYC and around the world.

Unit 2: Storytelling and Playwriting - Children will learn the basics of dramatic structure, how to develop story ideas and write dialogue.

Unit 3: Transforming Space - Children will learn how costume and set designers transform the stage into the world of play.

Unit 4: Sound and Music - Children will discover how sound and music contribute to a theatrical performance.

Unit 5: Create Theater Space and Perform - Children will improve their local communities by transforming an underutilized space (i.e. parking lot, school gym) into a performing arts venue. They will create a written business plan, develop a story idea, write dialogue, and design sets and costumes. Children will perform their original work in the newly designed space, showcasing their talents.

To register your child, ask your librarian for the sign-up sheet.
