Jane South and Jeffrey Kastner - An Artist Dialogue

Jane South and writer Jeffrey Kastner discuss the ideas behind her Shifting Structures series and its site determined construction Stacks and Pedestal Components for Art in The Corner Room and Art in the Windows exhibition series, followed by audience Q&A.
Born in Manchester, England, Jane South worked as a set designer in experimental theater before moving to the United States in 1989. She has lectured, taught, and served as artist in residence in the United States, Italy, Germany, France, and Australia and is currently an adjunct professor/critic in the Graduate Sculpture Department at Rhode Island School of Design.

Her work was included in Burgeoning Geometries: Constructed Abstractions at the Whitney Museum of American Art at Altria in 2007 and SLASH: Paper under the Knife at MAD (Museum of Arts & Design), New York in 2010. Other exhibitions of her work were held at The Drawing Center, NY, Williams College Museum of Art, Williamstown, MA, Albright-Knox Art Gallery, Buffalo, NY, Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts, Philadelphia, PA. Her work has been reviewed and published in The New Yorker, The New York Times, The New York Sun, The LA Times, ArtForum, Art in America, ART PAPERS, Sculpture Magazine, New York Magazine, Frieze, ARTnews and NY Arts Magazine amongst others.
She is the recipient of fellowships, grants, and residencies such as the Pollock-Krasner Foundation (2001, 2008), the New York Foundation for the Arts (2007), the Rockefeller Foundation Bellagio Center, Italy (2008), the MacDowell Colony, Peterborough, NH (2002, 2004) and Yaddo, Saratoga Springs, NY (2001, 2002). Most recently she was a recipient of a 2009 Joan Mitchell Foundation Painters and Sculptors Grant and a 2010 Camargo Foundation Residency in Cassis, France. The artist is represented by Spencer Brownstone Gallery, New York.
Jeffrey Kastner is the senior editor of Cabinet and was formerly senior editor of ARTnews and contributing editor of Art Monthly and Art/Text. A frequent contributor to Artforum, his writing has appeared in a wide variety of news and cultural publications, including Afterall, Bookforum, The Economist, frieze, and The New York Times. His work has been included in numerous books, including, most recently, Land Art: A Cultural Ecology Handbook (Royal Society, 2006), Fusion/Confusion (Museum Folkwang, 2008), PhotoEspana (PhotoEspana, 2008), and Experimental Geography (Melville House, 2008). Kastner was the editor of Land and Environmental Art (Phaidon, 1998), and co-editor of Plop: Recent Projects of the Public Art Fund (Merrell, 2004), and Odd Lots: Revisiting Gordon Matta-Clark’s Fake Estates (Cabinet Books, 2005). Kastner has also published catalogue essays on such artists as Doug Aitken, Jeremy Blake, Willie Doherty, and Sarah Sze.
Initiated and organized by Arezoo Moseni in 2004, Artist Dialogues Series provide an open forum for understanding and appreciation of contemporary art. Artists are paired with critics, curators, gallerists, writers or other artists to converse about art and the potential of exploring new ideas.
