Screening: GASLAND, a film by Josh Fox

Nominated for an Academy Award, Emmy winner and Special Jury Prize at Sundance, Josh Fox's seminal documentary GASLAND has sounded the alarm about the devastation caused by fracking (the extraction of natural gas by the process of hydraulic fracturing). The film follows communities across the U.S. whose air and drinking water have been contaminated by the chemicals used in fracking and the ensuing negative health impacts on humans and animals.   Communities that've been negatively impacted by fracking have slim legal recourse as the "Halliburton Loophole" frees the Oil & Gas Industry from complying with major portions of the Clean Air Act, Clean Water Act or Super Fund laws.

As currently two natural fracked gas pipelines are being built in NYC, and as NY State is poised to begin fracking, the film is a grim reminder of the true cost of natural fracked gas and fossil fuel.

Fox's mother, Angela Monti Fox (founder of The Mothers Project -http://www.themothersproject.org/ ) and Clare Donohue of Sane Energy Project ( http://saneenergyproject.org/ ) will speak about the current status of fracking in NYS and fracking pipelines being built in NYC. Especially in light of the recent devastation caused by Hurricane Sandy, with extreme weather costing lives, homes, infrastructure etc, it is time for us to question our reliance on fossil fuels.
