Cameron Highlander, Full War Service Kit., Digital ID 830985, New York Public LibraryResearch carried out at the University of Edinburgh, Scotland, shows that during WWI hundreds of Scottish men who emigrated to America at the turn of the century returned to fight for their mother country at the outbreak of the First World War. Many of the men had made a good life for themselves in America and were under no obligation to return to Scotland. Tragically, many of the volunteers did not return to America as they were killed on the battlefields or died in military hospitals. This public lectures and discussions will explore the legacy of the Scots in America during this traumatic period.
