"Life upon the Wicked Stage": New Books in the Performing Arts: Life Upon the Wicked Stage features "Night's Dancer: The Life of Janet Collins"
February 16, 2012
Program Locations:
New York Public Library for the Performing Arts, Dorothy and Lewis B. Cullman Center, Bruno Walter Auditorium
In this installment of our series, Life Upon the Wicked Stage: New Books in the Performing Arts, we feature Night’s Dancer: The Life of Janet Collins, by Yaël Tamar Lewin.
Ms. Lewin will discuss her new book, which chronicles the extraordinary life story of the dancer Janet Collins (1917–2003). An unusually versatile and creative performer, Janet Collins was a unique concert dance soloist and a black trailblazer in the white world of classical ballet. This year marks the 60th anniversary of her debut at the Metropolitan Opera, where she made international headlines as the first African-American prima ballerina.
