Event Details

In September 1654 the first group of Jewish refugees arrived in Nieuw Amsterdam: six women, four men and 13 children who had set sail from Recife, Brazil when it was reoccupied by the Portuguese.   Artist Susan C. Dessel will share her process of discovery about the lives of these women and their female descendants buried in three small Jewish cemeteries in Manhattan from 1682 to 1851 when burials were banned in New York below 86th Street.
