Share

September 2 through September 29, 2010

Program Locations:

Countee Cullen Library, Exhibition Space
These original paintings created by South African artists who lived during Apartheid portray a way of life that is fast disappearing in South Africa. They are historically significant because they depict a peoples’ struggles and eventual victory into freedom and democracy.

The works awaken the conscience and consciousness of a society and contribute to the downfall of oppression. These colorful and expressive paintings were inspired by hopes and dreams for the future.

Depicted above: ”The Library” by Mve Mve Jiyane, 1993, Pastel on paper. This painting is being donated to the Countee Cullen Library by Sam Bloomberg. It was created after the abolishment of Apartheid, when the African majority was finally permitted access to Public Libraries.
