LIVE TRANSMISSIONS: New Yorkers Reading, Movement of people in the lobby of The New York Public Library at Bryant Park. Pencil on paper. © 2012 Morgan O’HaraThe Art and Picture Collections at Mid-Manhattan Library present LIVE TRANSMISSIONS: New Yorkers Reading an exhibition of drawings by artist Morgan O’Hara. The drawings track, in real time, the vital movement of living beings, transcending both figuration and abstraction, executing a direct neural translation from one human action into another. Drawing methodically with multiple razor-sharp pencils and both hands, as performative drawing, O'Hara condenses movement into accumulations of graphite line which combine the controlled refinement of classical drawing with the unbound sensuality of spontaneous gesture. For this project she has spent many hours, in different NYC public venues including The New York Public Library, observing and drawing the many nuances of movement which go on as people engage in the act of reading.
