Biography
Eleanor May Sarton was born May 2, 1912 in Wondelgem, Belgium and raised in
Cambridge, MA. She was the daughter of George Sarton, the historian of science, and
Eleanor Mabel Elwes Sarton, an artist and designer.
May Sarton began her career in theater, first as an apprentice in Eva Le Gallienne's
Civic Repertory Theatre in New York (1929-34) and then as the founder and director
of the Associated Actors Theatre (1934-37). She published her first book, a volume
of poetry entitled Encounter in April, in 1937 and her first novel, The Single
House, in 1938. Her works also include journals and film scripts.
Throughout her career Sarton taught, read and lectured extensively across the United
States. She received awards and grants from the Poetry Society of America, The
Guggenheim Foundation, the National Endowment for the Arts, and the Unitarian
Universalist Women's Federation. In addition, she received the American Book Award
and honorary doctorates from Bates College, Colby College, the University of New
Hampshire, the University of Maine, Bowdoin College, Union College and Bucknell
University among others.
She died on July 16, 1995.

Sarton, May. Star Island Conference : miscellaneous
material, 1993 .
Subseries B: Talks by May Sarton [1948?] - 1982.
Arranged alphabetically by title. In some cases Sarton grouped related
lectures together in one folder; if so, additional titles are given in
the note field.
There is one oddity in this series entitled "Poets Group" (Box 65, Folder
2). In the later 1940s, Sarton formed a workshop with colleagues John
Holmes, Richard Wilbur, John Ciardi and Richard Eberhart. The folder
contains drafts of the poems brought to the workshop by the
participants, a few letters from John Holmes regarding the workshop and
a poem by him also about the workshop. Because there is no series in
which this item clearly belongs, it has been left where Sarton kept
it.

Series XIV: Correspondence
This series is divided into three subseries: Outgoing letters, Incoming
letters and Fan Mail. The division of Incoming letters and Fan Mail is based
on Sarton's files. She kept certain letters organized by author (the series
called Incoming Letters) and certain letters organized by alphabetical
letter but grouped together (the series called Fan Mail).
Material that did not come as part of the archives acquisition has an
individual source note attached to its description indicating how the Berg
Collection acquired it.
ALS stands for "autograph letter signed," TLS stands for "typed letter
signed" and ANS stands for "autograph note signed." In all three cases the S
may be dropped if the item is not signed.
Subseries A: Outgoing letters

Subseries B: Incoming Correspondence
Arranged alphabetically by author. Note oddities as beginning.
Several items have been placed at the beginning of this series because
they do not fit precisely within it. These include Sarton's folders of
photocopies of letters from Public figures, a folder listing the authors
of "very special single letters" and a Birthday Book given to her in
1991.
Photographs sent by authors of the letters have been kept with the
correspondence unless they are of, or include, May Sarton. These have
been removed and housed in the photography series and a note made both
on the original folder and the new.
Boxes 117-152

of researchers, these letters have been removed from the folder and
put into the alphabetical filing of incoming correspondence. The
folder has been kept so that researchers may see which letters
Sarton felt were most important.
